Psychological Evaluation
In this evaluation, your child can take two different kinds of tests:
- Cognitive tests check how the brain is working using many different types of tests, such as IQ tests and achievement tests.
An IQ test shows the strengths and weaknesses of your child’s thinking, based on his or her age. An achievement test shows your child’s skill level in different areas, such as reading, math, and comprehension. Other types of cognitive tests include memory tests, abstract reasoning tests, and visual processing tests. - Personality tests are used to determine your child’s personality style, traits, and emotional reactions.
These two different types of tests may be done separately or in combination. When done in combination, this is referred to as a “full battery.” This type of evaluation can only be done once a year.
Access
If your child is over age three, ask for an evaluation from your child’s school (LINK TO p118). If your child is under age three, ask for an evaluation from Early Intervention (LINK TO p115). You can also get a referral from your child’s pediatrician or a recommendation from your child’s school, childcare provider, or other parents or friends.
