Jennifer B. Freeman, PhD

Director, Pediatric Anxiety Research Center; and Associate Director of Research, Bradley Hospital

Jennifer Freeman is the director of the Pediatric Anxiety Research Center and the associate director of research at Bradley Hospital. She is also a professor (research) of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Freeman has spent more than two decades working to highlight the importance of innovative care models, community training, and meaningful integration of research and clinical practice in a hospital setting.

Her research focuses on these primary areas:

  • Cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT) for pediatric anxiety and OCD with a focus on the development of novel treatments/delivery methods and targeted augmentation approaches for treatment-refractory youth
  • The dissemination of effective training for community therapists delivering CBT
  • Early childhood OCD, including examination of course and trajectory of illness and
  • Developing new training and service models that provide high-quality, evidence-based care outside the office. 

Dr. Freeman is principal investigator on two PCORI-funded comparative effectiveness studies, including a recently funded $11 million award to study delivery models of cognitive behavioral treatment for anxious youth in community health settings. A core component of her work has been the integration of a variety of engaged partners, including patients, their family members, hospital administrators, patient advocates, community clinicians, and payers into these research projects.

Dr. Freeman was the principal investigator on an NIMH-funded multisite trial of exposure-based treatment for young children with OCD and the principal investigator on a number of past treatment trials for childhood OCD.

She earned master’s and doctorate degrees in clinical psychology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Freeman completed a clinical psychology pre-doctoral internship at the Brown University clinical psychology training program and a postdoctoral fellowship in child and pediatric psychology at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
