Eric Morrow, MD, PhD

Director, Developmental Disorders Genetics Research Program

Eric Morrow, MD, PhD, is the director of the Developmental Disorders Genetics Research Program at Bradley Hospital. In addition, he is the Mencoff Family Professor of Biology, a professor of brain science, a professor of neuroscience, and a professor of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.

Dr. Morrow performs research at Bradley Hospital through the Developmental Disorders Genetics Research Program (DDGRP), which was founded in 2009. This group is devoted to research working with families affected by developmental disabilities, including autism and intellectual disability. There is a focus on genetic subtypes of autism and intellectual disability, as well as profound autism.

He received his doctorate degree in genetics and neurodevelopment at Harvard University and his medical degree from the Health Science Training Program at MIT and Harvard Medical School. Dr. Morrow completed a postdoctoral fellowship in genetics at Harvard Medical School, an internship at Mount Auburn Hospital in Cambridge, Massachusetts, a neurology internship at Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH), and a psychiatry residency at MGH and McLean Hospital, where he served as the chief resident in psychopharmacology. He also served as a postdoctoral fellow in neurology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and a postdoctoral fellow in genetics at Boston Children’s Hospital, as well as a postdoctoral fellow in the medical and population genetics program at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard.

During this medical training, Dr. Morrow developed a strong interest in the scientific challenges posed by childhood neuropsychiatric disorders. He conducted further clinical and scientific training in neurology and psychiatry at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Morrow was MGH Rappaport Neuroscience Scholar and assistant professor at Harvard Medical School prior to coming to Brown University as an assistant professor in the department of molecular biology, cell biology and biochemistry.

In 2017, Dr. Morrow was one of 102 recipients of the Presidential Early Career Award in Science and Engineering—the government’s highest honor for a young scientist. The award was bestowed in recognition of his work on understanding and improving treatments for psychiatric conditions including autism and severe intellectual disability.  President Barack Obama said in the announcement, “These innovators are working to help keep the United States on the cutting edge, showing that federal investments in science lead to advancements that expand our knowledge of the world around us and contribute to our economy.”
