Larry K. Brown, MD
Academic Director of Research, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry
Larry Brown, MD, is the academic director in the division of child and adolescent psychiatry at the Bradley Hospital and Hasbro Children’s. In addition, he is a professor and vice chair in the department of psychiatry and human behavior at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University.
Dr. Brown specializes in adolescents with HIV/AIDS, especially those with associated psychological issues or substance abuse problems. He has participated as principal investigator or co-investigator in more than 12 federally funded research projects. His research interests are focused on AIDS prevention and safer sex programs for adolescents with psychiatric disorders. He has published more than 50 articles and book chapters about HIV/AIDS education and prevention. He serves on the editorial board of the Journal of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry.
Dr. Brown's research focuses on HIV and risk behaviors among adolescents and young adults. He conducts clinical treatment trials to reduce depression for those living with HIV and implementation research to improve the reach and effectiveness of the interventions. His research also looks at how digital health interventions improve medical adherence for those with HIV. He is the primary investigator of a NIMH T32 postdoctoral training program in HIV biobehavioral research and the primary investigator of a NIMH R25 Research Training Program for child and adolescent psychiatry fellows.
He earned a medical degree at the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. Dr. Brown completed a medical internship at the Mary Imogene Bassett Hospital and a general psychiatry residency and a child psychiatry fellowship at the Stanford University Medical Center in California.
He is a member of the American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Public Health Association, the International AIDS Society, the Rhode Island Medical Society, and the Rhode Island Psychiatric Society.
