The Medical/Psychiatric Program at Hasbro Children’s Hospital is expressly designed for children and adolescents with both challenging mental health and medical conditions who require hospitalization. A collaboration with Hasbro Children's Hospital, it is the only program in the region created to meet the complex needs of these children.

Children ages 6 to 18 are treated in a newly renovated, secure 8-bed unit located on the 6th floor of Hasbro Children’s Hospital. The unit was designed with input from both pediatrics and psychiatry to provide the very best care for children with psychiatric and medical illness. The safe, comfortable environment offers both private and semi-private rooms and areas for family, group and milieu therapy.

  • Medication evaluation and management
  • Individual therapy
  • Family therapy
  • Daily group therapy
  • Daily community meeting
  • Continuous milieu therapy, creating a healing environment 
  • Specialty services as needed, such as nutritional counseling and OT/PT services

The program has the ability to separate patients into smaller, age-appropriate groups.

Where do patients go from here?

All families receive individual recommendations on post-discharge care. Some children may “step down” to the Hasbro Children’s Partial Hospital Program. We recognize that a child’s illness affects all members of the family and our program is designed to support both patients and caregivers. We encourage families’ full participation in treatment.
