When Lifespan was founded in 1994, the health system drafted a mission statement which reads, in part, “The mission of Lifespan is to improve the health status of the people whom we serve.” The mission statement includes a number of key elements, one of which states “Lifespan will accomplish its mission when it is and is recognized as an organization that progressively strives to improve the health status of the community it serves.” The Lifespan community includes affiliated hospitals’ patients as well as Lifespan’s employees. Lifespan seeks to achieve its primary purpose of improving its community’s health status by promoting healthy lifestyles and discouraging the use of products, such as tobacco, that are known to cause harm.
As a result of our commitment to creating a culture of health, all Lifespan campuses are smoke free and, effective January 1, 2012, Lifespan will no longer hire users of tobacco products. In addition, the health system provides many services, most of which are free of charge, to employees to assist them in improving their health and well-being.
